Best Kitchen Scales for Portioning Nuts, Seeds and Grains
Five digital kitchen scales compared on published specs: capacity, 1-gram readings, power and size, plus a USDA gram chart for nuts, seeds and grains.
By Michael Gonzales · Last updated

Short answer: For portioning nuts, seeds and grains, get a digital kitchen scale that reads in 1-gram steps, has a tare (zero) button and holds at least 11 pounds (5 kg). The Escali Primo P115, Etekcity EK6015, Amazon Basics EK3211, OXO Good Grips 11 lb and My Weigh KD-8000 all meet that bar, from about $11 to $65.
We chose these five from the specs their makers and Amazon publish. We haven't used them ourselves, so this guide sticks to published specs, with no star ratings of our own and no claims about how one feels in the hand. Prices are what Amazon showed on October 20, 2026, and they change often.
The five scales at a glance
| Scale | Price (Oct 20, 2026) | Capacity | Reads in | Power | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Escali Primo P115 | $25.00 | 11 lb (5,000 g) | 1 g | 2 AA | Everyday portioning |
| Etekcity EK6015 | $13.99 | 11 lb (5,000 g) | 1 g (2 g minimum) | 2 AAA, included | Slim drawer storage |
| Amazon Basics EK3211 | $11.14 | 11 lb (about 5,000 g) | 1 g (2 g minimum) | 2 AAA, included | Lowest price |
| OXO Good Grips 11 lb, pull-out display | $62.85 | 11 lb (5 kg) | 1 g | 4 AAA, included | Big bowls |
| My Weigh KD-8000 | $49.91 | 8,000 g (17 lb 9 oz) | 1 g | 3 AA or plug-in adapter | Bulk grains and baking |
Specs come from each product's Amazon listing and, where noted, the maker's own page or manual [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][9][11]. The OXO and My Weigh prices were from third-party sellers on Amazon.
What makes a scale good for nuts, seeds and grains?
Three things: 1-gram readings, a tare button and enough room for a bowl. USDA lists one almond at about 1.2 grams and one Brazil nut at about 5 grams, so a scale that reads in whole grams is plenty for a portion of either [8].
Tare matters more than people expect. You set the bowl down, press tare, and the scale reads zero, so you only see the weight of what you pour in.
A wide platform helps with grains, since you'll often weigh oats or rice in a mixing bowl. All five scales here handle at least 11 pounds, far more than a week of portioned snacks.
Our picks, one by one
Escali Primo P115: best for everyday portioning
The Primo is the simple choice. It holds 11 pounds (5,000 g), reads in 1-gram steps and switches between grams, ounces and pounds-plus-ounces [1]. It runs on two AA batteries and shuts itself off after four minutes of sitting idle [1][11].
Its display and two buttons sit under a sealed panel, which Escali says guards against spills [1]. That's handy when you're pouring seeds or wiping off oil. The Amazon listing shows a lifetime limited warranty, and the scale measures 8.5 x 6 x 1.5 inches [1].
Etekcity EK6015: best for slim storage
At 0.6 inch thick and 7.3 x 5.7 inches, the EK6015 slides into a kitchen drawer [2]. It weighs up to 11 pounds in 1-gram steps, has a backlit screen and offers five units, including milliliters and fluid ounces for water or milk [2].
Two AAA batteries come installed. Etekcity lists a 2-gram minimum reading and a 2-minute auto-off, plus a two-year warranty [2]. The short auto-off is worth knowing about if you portion slowly.
Amazon Basics EK3211: best for the lowest price
At $11.14 on October 20, 2026, this was the cheapest of the five [3]. It weighs up to 11 pounds (about 5,000 g), reads to 1 gram with a 2-gram minimum, and shows pounds, ounces, grams, fluid ounces and milliliters [3].
It has a stainless steel platform, a tare button, two included AAA batteries and a footprint of 8.3 x 7 x 1.3 inches [3]. If you just want grams and tare, it covers that.
OXO Good Grips 11 lb with pull-out display: best for big bowls
The display on this OXO pulls forward away from the platform, so a wide bowl doesn't hide the numbers [4][7]. A bar meter shows how much of the 11-pound capacity you've used, and the screen has an optional backlight [4][7].
It reads in 1-gram steps and comes with four AAA batteries [4][5]. OXO's manual says it dims to standby after 6 minutes idle and shuts off after 30 [7]. It's the priciest here: $62.85 from a third-party seller on Amazon and $64.99 on OXO's site on October 20, 2026 [4][5].
My Weigh KD-8000: best for bulk grains and baking
The KD-8000 holds the most, 8,000 grams (17 pounds 9 ounces), and reads in 1-gram steps [6]. Its removable stainless tray is 7 x 7 inches, and the whole scale is 9.8 x 8 x 3.8 inches [6].
It runs on three AA batteries or the included 5-volt adapter, and the auto-off time is programmable [6]. It also has a baker's percentage mode and a removable cover over the screen and keys [6][9]. On October 20, 2026, Amazon listed it at $49.91 from a third-party seller [9]. If you weigh big batches of oats or rice for the week, the larger tray and plug-in power help.
How many grams is a serving of nuts, seeds and grains?
One ounce of nuts is 28.35 grams, which USDA lists as about 23 almonds, 14 walnut halves, 49 pistachios or 6 Brazil nuts [8]. Grains and seeds are where cups and spoons drift most. A tablespoon of whole flaxseed weighs 10.3 g, but a tablespoon of ground flaxseed is only 7 g [8].
| Food | Common measure | Grams | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Almonds | 1 oz (about 23 kernels) | 28 | 164 |
| Walnuts, English | 1 oz (about 14 halves) | 28 | 185 |
| Pistachios, raw | 1 oz (about 49 kernels) | 28 | 159 |
| Brazil nuts | 1 oz (about 6 kernels) | 28 | 187 |
| Pumpkin seeds, whole, roasted | 1 oz (about 85 seeds) | 28 | 126 |
| Flaxseed, whole | 1 tbsp | 10.3 | 55 |
| Flaxseed, ground | 1 tbsp | 7 | 37 |
| Rolled oats, dry | 1/2 cup | 40.5 | 153 |
| Quinoa, uncooked | 1/4 cup | 42.5 | 156 |
| Brown rice, long-grain, uncooked | 1/4 cup | 46 | 170 |
Weights and calories are from USDA FoodData Central, SR Legacy, using USDA's portion weights [8]. Brands and batches vary a little.
Brazil nuts are the one food here where counting single nuts matters, because each one is so high in selenium. Our page on how many Brazil nuts a day has the numbers and the upper limit. For more on seeds, see pumpkin seeds nutrition, and for walnuts and flax, our omega-3 foods list.
How do you portion nuts with a kitchen scale?
Put an empty bowl on the scale, press tare so it reads zero, then pour until you hit your target, such as 28 grams. Here's a routine that works for a week of snacks:
- Set the scale to grams, the unit USDA uses for its nutrient data [8].
- Put a small container on the platform and press tare.
- Add nuts or seeds until the display reaches your portion.
- Tip the portion into a jar or bag, put the empty container back, and repeat.
For oats, quinoa or rice, weigh straight into the pot or bowl you'll cook in. One less measuring cup to wash.
How do you check if a kitchen scale is accurate?
Weigh something whose weight you know. The U.S. Mint lists a nickel at 5.00 grams, so ten nickels should read close to 50 grams [10]. It's a quick spot check, not a lab calibration.
A few habits help any scale read consistently. Use it on a flat, steady counter at room temperature. Escali's manual also says electromagnetic interference, such as a radio running nearby, can throw off the display [11]. Swap the batteries when the low-battery symbol shows up.
Should you weigh food in grams or ounces?
Grams. They're smaller steps than ounces, and USDA FoodData Central reports nutrients per 100 grams, so the math is easier [8]. Every scale on this list switches units with one button, so you can still read ounces when a recipe calls for them.
If you're building meals around portions, our high-fiber foods and magnesium tables list each serving in grams. More tables are on our nutrients page.

Frequently asked questions
Which kitchen scale is most accurate?
We can't rank accuracy because we haven't used these models ourselves. On paper, all five scales in this guide read in 1-gram steps. For a quick check at home, the U.S. Mint lists a nickel at 5.00 grams, so ten nickels should read close to 50 grams.
What size kitchen scale do I need for portioning food?
An 11-pound (5 kg) capacity covers nuts, seeds, grains and most mixing bowls. If you weigh large batches, the My Weigh KD-8000 holds 8,000 grams.
How many grams is a serving of almonds?
One ounce is 28.35 grams, which USDA lists as about 23 whole almonds and about 164 calories.
Should I weigh food in grams or ounces?
Grams. A gram is a smaller step than an ounce, and USDA nutrition data is reported per 100 grams, so the math is simpler. Every scale in this guide switches units with one button.
What does the tare button on a kitchen scale do?
It resets the display to zero with a container on the platform, so you see only the weight of the food you add. Press it again between ingredients to weigh several things in one bowl.
